July 2nd was a Sunday, and there were only about 12 documents to choose from, all of which are pretty boring. (Since the WRB worked a six day work week, Sundays are usually their respite, consisting of letters from the public and cables sent from the reps on Saturdays that didn’t arrive until Sunday).
After his trip to Cairo to interview Joel Brand, Ira Hirschmann returned to Ankara with malaria. He was completely delirious and out of commission for about a week, finally rousing himself and, though cranky, went to a picnic at Steinhardt’s. The ambassador was about to travel to the US and Hirschmann had to say goodbye and meet with some of the Jewish org representatives.
