Hirschmann wasn’t going to Turkey alone. The War Refugee Board offices in Turkey were now staffed by four people. Hirschmann was in charge, but he would be aided by Herbert Katzki, a long-time refugee worker with the Joint, and a man who had a LOT more experience in this field than Hirschmann. They would share two secretaries: a middle-aged woman named Virginia Henderson, who was a Treasury staffer, and young Mary Harriet Bixler. Harriet, in her early 20s, had taken secretarial courses, but had never had a job even remotely like this. She was the daughter of a college professor and born in the Middle East herself. So why not? She’s incredibly sweet and excited, and it’s clear that she charmed the WRB staff in Washington. So off she goes to Turkey too. Here’s her oath of office as a new government employee.
