The idea of protective papers becomes a constant theme from this point on.
Cordell Hull is really mad about the Pearson leak. He blames Pehle, whom he says talks too much. At Hull’s demand, Morgenthau does an “investigation” of the leak. Pehle’s out of town, and Ansel Luxford and Josiah DuBois both denied it. DuBois reports that the leak probably came from one of the rabbis–after all, they did vow to get the press involved.
In reality, it was likely Baruch Korff who talked to Drew Pearson–Korff confesses to Hull later that day, but doesn’t apologize at all. Korff isn’t the only one who talked to Pearson, though. DuBois had lunch with Pearson on Saturday afternoon, before the Sunday broadcast. I’m not sure whether Pehle knew DuBois was going to leak the information to Pearson, but it was definitely a plan.
