One of Peter Bergson’s first actions as the head of the Hebrew Committee of National Liberation and self-appointed representative to the United States of the “Hebrew” people was to reach out to the American Jewish community to form an alliance.
There’s no way he actually thought this would work.
Joseph Proskauer, head of the American Jewish Committee, seems rightly incredulous in this letter.
“While I am impressed by the validity of your suggestion that there should be an end of bickering…I cannot see how the course your Hebrew Committee of National Liberation is following is effective to that end.”
