There’s so much going on. The President is about to announce the creation of Fort Ontario, Joel Brand is in Istanbul, the WRB is about to get their first request to bomb the rail lines leading to the concentration camps. But this is one of my favorite documents that I have, and I want to share it.
FDR did not like the term “free port” since it did not indicate the temporary nature of the shelter. So the WRB came up with a list of other terms he could use to refer to the haven. They decided on “Emergency Refugee Shelter.” But doesn’t “SOS–Station of Safety” have such a ring to it?
