At the very end of July, Ira Hirschmann went to see Cardinal Angelo Roncalli, the apostolic nuncio in Turkey.  Roncalli had been working with the Jewish Agency to use Vatican channels to transmit names into German territory of Jews who should be protected.  Hirschmann didn’t really work with Roncalli, but asked the Cardinal to fill out a questionnaire about the church’s activities and what might be done in the future.  Here’s Hirschmann’s description of the future Pope John XXIII.
