So April 16th was a Sunday, which means I only have 5 documents to choose from. You could read a nine-page memo on the situation in Yugoslavia, one of two letters from the public supporting aid for refugees, a Hebrew-language newspaper clipping, the WRB weekly report for April 10-16, or this document, a clipping from the Washington Post about Harry Dexter White. White shows up sporadically in the WRB records, mainly because he was a high-ranking Treasury advisor. Olsen had worked directly for White before leaving for Stockholm. This is a great profile—the press just seemed to have much more fun with profiles than they do these days. After the war, White is charged with spying for the Russians. There’s a new book by Benn Steil, “The Battle of Bretton Woods,” that gets into it, and into the Bretton Woods conference, that I bought and have to read.
